Starting immediately MobileLutions is offering a free version of its commercial app to all GPS-enabled Android and Blackberry smartphone consumers to keep them safer on the roads by blocking incoming and outgoing texts while driving. The iPhone version of the software is due out in the first quarter of 2011.

“By providing this free service to the general public, MobileLutions hopes to reduce accidents on the roads and, potentially, save lives,” says Doug Ortega, co-founder of MobileLutions. “Naturally, people think of protecting their teenagers, but just look around and you will see there are more than just teenagers texting.

“It’s no secret phone usage while driving is a very high-risk behavior leading to more deaths and accidents on our roadways and highways,” adds Ortega, “According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT), approximately 5,500 will die this year because of distracted drivers,” added Ortega. “That is 15 people per day.” In addition, in 2009, the U.S. DOT reported an estimated 448,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes due to distracted driving.

MobileLutions software allows companies to apply their corporate policies for mobile phone use at the device level. “With the increasing use of smartphones, corporate liability is continuing to grow at an alarming rate,” says Larry Eppard, co-founder of MobileLutions. “Corporations must take steps to enforce policies to reduce the company’s risk; as well as protect their employees from the human tendency to misuse these devices while driving.”

According to research conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, texting while driving increases crash or near-crash events by 23.2 times compared to non-distracted driving. In addition, in qualifying “distracted drivers,” the U.S. DOT identifies three main types of distraction: visual (taking eyes off the road); manual (taking your hands off the wheel); and cognitive (taking your mind off what you’re doing). Texting is the most dangerous distraction because it involves all three types of distraction.
