Timex Run Trainer named the Best Running GPS Watch for 2011
Timex Run Trainer Named Best Running GPS Watch For 2011 By Heart Rate Watch Company - Heart Rate Watch Company has named the Timex Run Trainer as the best GPS running watch for 2011. Timex added many features to just sneak past the rival Garmin Forerunner 210.
It has barely arrived in stores and already the Timex Run Trainer GPS watch is taking the running community by storm. It took all of the attributes of the Garmin Forerunner 210 and further improved upon them by adding even more features into a device at a slightly lower price point. It's rare to find a circumstance where more features actually costs less, but this is one of them.
The Run Trainer added alerts for distance and pace that the Garmin 210 did not have and furthermore it is water resistant to 50 meters where the Garmin is only IPX7 (3 meters for 30 minutes). Garmin has a 2 hour edge on battery life at 10 hours between charges but no ability to set up your own recording intervals (1s, 2s, 4s or 8s) like the Run Trainer. The Run Trainer also included an auto start/stop which is great for stop lights while the Garmin 210XT did not include this feature.
"We were super impressed with what we saw coming out of the folks at Timex on this GPS watch", says Rusty Squire, Heart Rate Watch Company President. Squire further adds, "It was a really close call between the Timex Run Trainer and the Garmin Forerunner 210 but we had to give the nod to Timex for adding some features the Garmin did not have and their Training Peaks software platform."
The Timex with no chest strap is $189 and the Garmin with no chest strap is $199, or a $10 differential. It should ne noted that normally units without chest straps are purchased by previous owners who already have a compatible chest strap and a few folks that don't watch heart rate. The Timex chest strap unit is $229 while the Garmin is $249, so it is a $20 advantage to Timex.
Obviously the looks and design is a matter of personal taste along with sizing and fit. The Garmin Forerunner 210 is noticeably smaller than the Timex Road Trainer but the test crew did get a stealth photo of the Run Trainer on the wrist of a 110 pound 5 foot 2 inch runner girl with tiny little 5 inch wrists and it didn't look too bad - a little big admittedly. Our testers gave the nod to Timex in the "manly looks" department but Garmin just released a turquoise accented version of it's 210 so they had the edge for the women in our book for looks.
The battle for the road will be fought over the next year in the GPS watch market and while Garmin has had a commanding lead on all of the other entrants up until now, Timex seems to be coming on very strong and will challenge the Garmin Edge 500 bike computer in February with the release of the Timex Road Trainer RT3 bike computer. Not to be left out Nike has introduced a GPS running watch in the form of the Nike Plus Sport watch but the Nike system seems oriented toward the more recreational user, which is why it was not considered for the award.
For consumers this heated battle will be good news because finally Garmin has some real, legitimate competition on the GPS front and this can only help lead to better product development for the benefit of all. [Video Demo][Source]
