Toshiba's E-Waste Recycling Program Expanded

Toshiba's E-Waste Recycling Program Expanded to Accept All Spent Imaging Consumables – Celebrates Record Growth - Toshiba America Business Solutions Inc. (TABS) celebrates an amazing 410 percent year-over-year increase* in recycled imaging consumables as part of its “Zero Waste to Landfill” program. As the first manufacturer to partner with Close the Loop Inc. (CTL), a world-class recycler of imaging consumables, Toshiba has consistently led the e-waste recycling revolution with their dedication to the environment. The company is taking the “green” lead once again by expanding their program and accepting any spent imaging consumables, regardless of manufacturer, making it easier-than-ever for business customers to recycle.

Toshiba's E-Waste Recycling Program

“To our knowledge, we are currently the only manufacturer accepting used imaging consumables from other companies, and we do it at no cost to our customers,” said Tom Walter, director, Aftermarket Sales, Marketing and Operations for TABS. “With e-waste growing at record rates, Toshiba wants to make it simple for businesses to recycle imaging consumables, not because we have to, but because it’s the right thing to do.”

With nearly 90,000 pounds of electronic waste recycled since the partnership began in late 2008, Toshiba has contributed to the creation of eLumber, Close the Loop’s patented composite product which is used to build structures for local communities and non-profit organizations. For example, in the past three years Toshiba’s recycled cartridges have been used to create numerous park benches, fences and garden boxes for Habitat for Humanity®.

Mail your Old-CellPhone and Win $1,000 from PlantMyPhone

PlantMyPhone, the easy cellphone recycling service, announces the first winner of the PlantMyPhone cellphone recycling sweepstake on United Nations World Environment Day (June 5th). Jason Prodoehl of San Francisco, California became the winner of the $1,000 sweepstake by mailing in his old cellphone and being randomly drawn from the pool of participants that started recycling with PlantMyPhone since its launch two months ago in March 2010.

Cellphone recycling for reforestation
According the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans annually retire 130 million mobile devices, and many of these end up improperly disposed of in landfills. Cell phones waste often contains hazardous materials such as arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc. Disposing of cell phones in landfills enables these pollutants to seep into water, land and animals that interact with these toxins.

“Electronic waste is a serious problem in the world and we all need to do all we can to minimize the impact on the environment.” explained Jason ” I saw the poster at Starbucks about recycling my phone. It sounded like a great idea, and the organization name was quite clever. I mailed my old cell phone in less than 2 minutes. I was surprised about how easy it was to use PlantMyPhone.”

PlantMyPhone enables everyone to easily and properly recycle their old cellphone through the mail to fund the planting of new trees in reforestation

Home Used Electronics Free Recycling - Crutchfield Store

Dispose your old Electronics home used dumped items for Recycling, that to Free from Crutchfield Store

CrutchfieldAfter a record-shattering turnout for an electronics recycling event in January, the Charlottesville-Albemarle community will get another opportunity to properly dispose of old electronics for free.

The location for the April 26 event is once again the Crutchfield store at Rio Hill Shopping Center, and it runs from noon to 4. The event is being held on a Sunday rather than a Saturday because traffic is generally much lighter on Sundays.

To keep the lines moving, there’s a limit of three items per household. There was no limit at the January event, and volunteers unloading the vehicles struggled to keep up when trucks and vans arrived with full payloads. This time, traffic will be directed to the front door of the Crutchfield store, where three items can be quickly unloaded.

To keep potentially harmful substances out of landfills, area residents are encouraged to bring in electronic items such as televisions, computer monitors, computers, printers, copiers, phones, stereos and VCRs. Batteries, CDs. DVDs, and toner cartridges are also acceptable. Electric items such as lamps, hair dryers, fans, toasters and power tools are not acceptable. Please click to see the complete list of acceptable items (See here for the list: http://recyclecville.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/aerc-accepted-e-waste-items.pdf).

The turnout for the January event proved that Charlottesville-area residents are well-informed about the potential hazards of e-Waste and are motivated to properly dispose of it. More than 218,577 pounds (109 tons) of electronics were collected at the event, which is believed to be a new state record for a one-day event.

The January event was funded by an anonymous local foundation and supported by Albemarle County, AERC Recycling, the Charlottesville Community Design Center, the City Of Charlottesville, Crutchfield, Papa Johns Pizza, the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority, the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission and University of Virginia Recycling.

The upcoming event is sponsored by Sony and Crutchfield. Participants can get a coupon good for $50 off select TVs when dropping off items for recycling during this event. The coupon is good on Sunday, April 26 only.
