Cool Math Games Site that is Educational and Equally Fun
Cool Math Games Site HoodaMath.com Celebrates 3rd Anniversary - 3 years ago, middle-school math teacher Michael Edlavitch set-out to create a cool math site that is educational and equally fun.
HoodaMath.com came from humble beginnings. It began with one game, Number Eaters, created by the founder Michael Edlavitch. The idea was that his students in the coming school year would able to play the game on any computer with Internet access and be able to practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
As a middle-school math teacher in an urban school district, Michael found it difficult to teach rational numbers, pre-algebra, and algebra to students who hadn't yet mastered the fundamentals.
Due to the rapidly increasing popularity of the website, Hooda Math began to add more and more cool math games. Michael quickly learned the expense of running his own math learning site and needed to add advertising to help pay the expenses.
Hooda Math chose advertisements over a subscription service. In the middle-school math teacher's words, "How can we expect schools to pay for an online math games site, when they can't even afford to pay their teachers."
During year 1, Hooda Math discovered a limited number of flash animation movies about mathematics, and made the decision to add these to his site as well. HoodaMath.com also began to create math worksheets to go along with the games, so that students could prove that they were learning classroom mathematics by playing online math video games.
The final category, Math Tutorials was added during the summer between year 1 and year 2. HoodaMath.com discovered that many math textbooks were lacking examples at the beginning of chapters that parents and tutors often used to refresh their math skills. Hooda Math has an ever increasing library of 1-2 minute math videos demonstrating basic math skills. Michael hopes to add tutorials to cover all the math standards for grades K - 8 and beyond.
After 2 years of dedicating his free-time to HoodaMath.com, Michael decided he couldn't work two jobs anymore and had to leave the classroom to pursue the bigger classroom of now over 2 million players of cool math games on HoodaMath.com.
Year 3, has been an interesting one for Hooda Math Games. They were able to increase their free math games catalog to almost 200 math games focusing on three main math categories: Geometry, Arithmetic, and Logic.
Michael looks forward to increasing the awareness of his cool math games site, HoodaMath.com and never fails to mention, "You can find our featured math games quickly at hm.gs or by searching for Hooda with two O's ." [Source]
