LCD TV Shipment of 40” and Larger Sizes to Improve in 2012

LCD TV Shipment Growth to Improve in 2012, Driven by 40” and Larger Sizes - Total TV Market to Rise 2% in 2012 After No Growth in 2011 Due to Soft Consumer Demand and Early Inventory Pressure, NPD DisplaySearch Reports

Consumer demand for TVs has been softer than expected in 2011, but is showing signs of improvement late in the year. However, inventory pressure plagued the industry through much of early 2011 and led to a sharp reduction in shipments to retailers. The result is that global TV unit shipments are expected to rise only 0.1% in 2011. According to the latest forecast released in the NPD DisplaySearch Advanced Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report, growth is expected to improve in 2012, rising 2% to 254 million units.

LCD TV Shipment of 40” and Larger Sizes to Improve in 2012

“Global economic conditions have improved in 2011, but more slowly than expected, and consumers in mature TV markets like Europe face continuing uncertainty, which is leading to very cautious spending patterns,” noted Paul Gagnon, Director of North America TV Research for NPD DisplaySearch. Gagnon added, “Because price reductions are not as vigorous as a few years ago, partially due to a mature manufacturing base but also because of transitions to advanced features like LED backlights and 3D, consumers are becoming more willing to wait for peak sale periods to purchase.”

Flat panel TV continues to grow, but at a more gradual pace of 2-4% per year as the rapid transition from CRT to LCD and plasma nears an end. LCD TV continues to be the dominant technology on a unit and revenue basis, and in fact seems likely capture even more market share due to a weaker outlook for plasma TV going forward. As LCD narrows the pricing gap with plasma at many sizes, the demand for plasma has fallen; NPD DisplaySearch expects this to continue and has reduced its forecast for plasma TV.

LED Backlight TV Shipment Growth Increased in 2011

DisplaySearch: LCD TV Shipment Growth Falls to Record Low in Q2’11 as Global TV Demand Softens Further - Global TV Shipments Dropped 1% Y/Y While LCD TV Posted Record Low 6% Y/Y Growt

Global TV shipments were soft in Q1’11 as the worldwide TV supply chain digested excess inventory, but growth was still up 1% Y/Y. In Q2’11, TV shipment growth turned negative, declining 1% Y/Y and falling more than 6% Y/Y in developed regions, which more than offset 3% growth in emerging markets according the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly Advanced Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report. Softer price declines and inventory pressure at retail due to lackluster consumer demand continue to put pressure on TV brands.

“Q2’10 was a very strong shipment growth period due to greater price erosion and more confident consumers, so the comparison of this year’s shipments to a year ago is tough, especially considering the surge of shipments in early 2010 due to anticipated demand related to the World Cup Soccer tournament,” noted Hisakazu Torii, Vice President of TV Research at DisplaySearch. Torii added, “Due to weakening macro-economic conditions, similar to what happened during the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, the TV industry is becoming somewhat pessimistic and reducing inventory, especially in North America and Western Europe.”

LCD TV shipments worldwide grew at least 20% each quarter in 2010, but so far have only risen 9% Y/Y in Q1’11 and 6% Y/Y in Q2’11. The slowing growth has impacted both developed and emerging markets, with LCD TV units falling 5% and rising 19% respectively, both well below the rate of growth a year earlier. The main inhibitor to faster LCD TV price erosion, something that has a strong positive impact on consumer demand in the highly elastic TV market, has been the transition from CCFL to LED and slower component pricing declines. LED share increased from 18% of LCD TV shipments in Q2’10 to more than 43% in Q2’11, but still carries a 74% average premium across all sizes, though this is down from a 120%+ premium a year ago. Critical LED backlight cost breakthroughs have been slow to materialize.

Developed Countries Have a Greater Number of TVs per Person

Flat Panel TV Owners Likely to Own More TVs, Regardless of Country - Developed Countries Have a Greater Number of TVs per Person, but Households are Not Necessarily Replacing TVs More Often than Those in Emerging Countries

Recent findings from the new DisplaySearch Global TV Replacement Study show that the commonly-held assumption that households in richer countries own more TVs is true: the study found that households in developed countries own 28% more TVs on average than households in emerging countries. However, DisplaySearch found that, within nearly every region, the number of TVs per household for flat panel TV owners is greater than non-flat panel TV owners. In fact, the tendency for flat panel TV adopters to own more TVs was even stronger in emerging markets, indicating a stronger separation of buying power among upper and lower income classes.

“Whether a consumer resides in an economically developed or emerging country, those who are willing to adopt new TV technologies possess greater interest in owning TVs in general, have higher incomes, and can afford more TVs, or both,” noted Paul Gagnon, DisplaySearch Director of North America TV Market Research.

Gagnon added, “Owners of at least one flat panel TV in developed countries owned 30% more TVs per household than households that didn’t own any flat panel TVs. In emerging countries, the difference was even higher on average, with flat panel owners having 37% more TVs than non-flat panel owners.”
