London Startup Scirra Launches HTML5 Game Creator — No Programming Required A new HTML5 game maker for Windows allows everybody to make games by replacing programming with a visual editor. Scirra has announced release of its new game creator, Construct 2.

Games can now be made in Construct 2 using its visual interface without the user needing technical skills, Scirra has announced. It also serves as a rapid prototyping tool for advanced game developers. Users define their game logic by creating blocks called "events", which are intuitively readable. Animations, sounds and special effects can be dragged and dropped into the editor to complete the games.

Games made in Scirra's Construct 2 consist of just HTML, Javascript and images. Authors have total freedom to distribute their creations without restriction. "A drawback of other tools is you have to publish through the vendor's channels" says Director Thomas Gullen. "Our tool gives the authors total control."

HTML5 games can be played in any modern web browser including on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux. The free edition of Construct 2 comes with original music, sounds and art to inspire new game creators. The $32 "Standard Early-Adopter" license adds features and more media, and there are extra options for businesses.

Consumers Don’t Know What “Cloud Computing” Is, Even Though They Use it All the Time - While the term “cloud computing” is still confusing to many, the activities that constitute cloud computing are being performed by the vast majority of consumers, according to the NPD Group.

According to a recent study from The NPD Group, a leading market research company, just 22 percent of U.S. consumers were familiar with the term “cloud computing,” which denotes software applications or processes that are accessed from the Internet, rather than on personal computer hard drives. While the term “cloud computing” is still confusing to many consumers, the activities that constitute cloud computing are being performed by the vast majority of consumers.

More than three quarters (76 percent) of U.S. respondents in NPD’s “Digital Software and the Cloud Report” reported using some type of Internet-based cloud service in the past 12 months -- with email, tax preparation and online gaming leading the way. Even so, the enormous usage of these cloud-based services has not completely supplanted desktop-computer-based applications: Nearly one quarter (24 percent) of U.S. consumers reported purchasing a computer-based software application in the past six months.

“Whether they understand the terminology or not, consumers are actually pretty savvy in their use of cloud-based applications,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis for NPD. “They might not always recognize they are performing activities in the cloud, yet they still rely on and use those services extensively. Even so, they are not yet ready to completely give up on traditional PC-based software applications.”

However, Translia now offers support for both PDF and image files through a series of R&D efforts based on its USPTO patent-pending collaborative translation system.

As PDF and image files are two of the most common categories that are in need of document translation, this added new feature is a smart and useful business move for Translia. PDF and image file support is expected to bring 25% to 30% more business due to the exceedingly common nature of PDF and image files in our work and private lives. Some examples of the types of files that will benefit from this additional file support are: e-books and e-magazines (Kindle), online newsletters and white papers, financial reports of listed companies (NYSE or NASDAQ), photos containing text (shot with Apple iPhone 4 or Windows Phone), and scanned documents (e.g. Sarah Palin’s emails scanned by New York Times). While these files are unable to be translated directly by many online translation tools on the internet like Google Translate and Microsoft Translator, Translia now provides that capability.

However, this new feature is not without any minor limitations. Clients must pay 10% more to have their PDF and image files translated than the traditional file types (such as TXT and DOC), because translators must look at the PDF and image files in order to create the translations, thus requiring longer translation times. While Translia provides "Translation Memory" for its other file types, this feature is not offered for PDF and image files. In addition, the PDF and image translations are not able to be exported to bilingual spreadsheets, thus limiting a client's ability to easily compare the translation to the source. Therefore, clients are recommended to provide the editable source files to translate as possible.

All the location information is then stored in a standard SQL database format in a file called as “consolidated.db” in the User Data Partition area. This file is unencrypted and anyone who accesses this file can see the same information that any geographically based iPhone app uses.

Microsoft Support by Donating $250,000 of Software

Microsoft Donates $250,000 of Software to Create IT Jobs for Youth in Kenya - Microsoft Corp. announced today a donation of software with a retail value of $250,000 to Digital Divide Data (DDD). The grant, from Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential program, will support DDD to bring its social business model to Kenya. The new venture will provide services such as data entry, XML conversion and digital preservation for publishers, libraries, content hosts, academic researchers and businesses.

Microsoft’s software will be used to provide training and client services for a business process outsourcing (BPO) social enterprise that will employ at least 300 youth from slum areas in Nairobi over the next two years. Microsoft’s support will help youth in Kenya to build the strong computer and technology skills they need to succeed—and to enable sustained social and economic opportunity.

“We are committed to investing in innovative solutions that will help advance IT skills locally and support rising technology stars of the future,” said Jeffrey Avina, Microsoft’s Director of Community Affairs for Middle East and Africa. “This initiative is based on the realization that there is need not only to equip young people with IT skills but also to provide them with on-the-job experience. DDD’s track record of sustained social and economic development in Southeast Asia inspired us to make this unprecedented grant.”
